In Zefyr: A Thief’s Melody, players will become a thief in training and must help sick animals, investigate kidnappings, and learn to use the power of music to overcome obstacles. Players begin the game by learning standard mobility controls such as jumping, climbing, and navigating through an introductory course at the guild.

After a brief tutorial, players will be given their first set of quests. While out completing these quests, more adventurous players who talk to every random NPC they see will also unlock even more quests. While some quests seem like filler, they will often connect to other main quests by providing useful items such as maps and music scores or even currency. All of which will help players advance through the story.

Flexible Gameplay & Skill Acquirement

While Zefyr is a game about a thief, players can choose between playing stealthily or in a more confrontational manner. Having multiple ways to overcome obstacles makes the game a bit more welcoming to different player types.

Players also have enough freedom to tackle jobs in whatever order they want. This is great for those players who want to explore every inch of an area before jumping into combat. In addition to jobs, players can take courses to gain additional skills.

Courses become available as players progress the story and enter new areas to explore. Courses are in the form of dojos, with each skill having a dedicated dojo. These courses also cost money to take, so players will need to complete jobs and explore to add new abilities to their arsenals.

Each dojo in Zefyr features environmental puzzles that create a fun challenge. Once players collect the skill from a chest, the second stage of the dojo begins. This stage is where players will then use the new skill to familiarize themselves with the controls or any cooldowns.

Final Thoughts on Zefyr: A Thief’s Melody

Zefyr: A Thief’s Melody is a love letter to classic RPGs such as The Legend of Zelda and the Sly Cooper franchises. The art style is bright and fun, and it feels like stepping back into some of those earlier games in the genre. The music in Zefyr is relaxing and also does a great job of setting the atmosphere of each location and encounter.

The gameplay is easy to learn and offers a good amount of flexibility when it comes to problem-solving. This flexibility extends to choosing which jobs and courses to complete and in what order to complete them.

If you enjoy games such as The Legend of Zelda: The Wind Waker you should give Zefyr: A Thief’s Melody a try. Zefyr: A Thief’s Melody is currently available on Steam and Itch.io for $19.99.
